Activating a License
Retrieve your key, activate Filament on a machine, and understand what gets stored locally.
Activating a License
Activating Filament does not require a separate installer. The same app handles both trial and paid use.
Activation checklist
- Download the desktop app from filament.click/download
- Buy Filament or sign in to the customer dashboard
- Open the customer portal to retrieve your raw license key
- Launch Filament and go to Settings -> License
- Paste the key and activate the current machine
What Filament sends during activation
The desktop app sends the license key to Filament's backend, not directly to Polar.
The activation request also includes:
- installation ID
- machine ID
- hashed machine fingerprint
- app version
- platform
Filament's backend validates the license with Polar, records the activation state, and returns a signed receipt to the desktop app.
What Filament stores locally
On your machine, Filament stores:
- the raw license key and installation secret in the operating system's secure credential store where available
- signed receipts and non-secret license state in the app's local database
Moving to a new machine
Each paid license supports 2 concurrent activations.
Before changing machines:
- open Settings -> License
- remove the license from the old machine if you still have access
- activate on the new machine
If you no longer have access to the old machine, use the customer portal or contact support.
If activation fails
Start with Troubleshooting License Validation. If you still need help, export support logs from Filament and send them to support.
